What is Trop-T test? How it is related to the heart?

The main purpose of performing the Troponin-T or Trop-T test is to determine the troponin levels in the blood.

Basically, Troponin is a kind of protein found only in the heart muscle fibers involved in regulating muscle contraction. Troponin is absent in the bloodstream. But in the condition where heart muscles are injured, troponin gets leaked into the bloodstream. With the increase in damage, a higher amount of troponin is released into the blood.

Primarily, troponin tests are used to determine if a person has suffered a heart attack. They may also help evaluate other forms of heart injury.

TYPES OF TROPONIN

Mainly, there are three types of troponin:

  1. Troponin C- It initiates the contraction by binding calcium and moves troponin I.
  2. Troponin T- This troponin anchors the troponin complex to the muscle fiber structure.
  3. Troponin I- It can help in identifying individuals who have experienced damage to their hearts.

WHAT IS THE TROP-T TEST USED FOR?

This test is most often used to diagnose a heart attack. It is sometimes used to monitor angina, a condition that limits blood flow to the heart and causes chest pain. Angina sometimes leads to a heart attack.

This test may also be used after you were diagnosed with a heart attack and admitted to a hospital. Testing is usually repeated two or more times in a 24-hour period. This is done to see if there are any changes in troponin levels over time.

WHY DO YOU NEED THIS TEST?

You may need this test if you have been admitted to the emergency room with symptoms of a heart attack. These symptoms include:

  1. Chest pain or discomfort
  2. Pain in other parts of the body, including your arm, back, jaw, or neck
  3. Trouble breathing
  4. Nausea and vomiting
  5. Fatigue
  6. Dizziness
  7. Sweating

If you have symptoms of a heart attack, call 6283705192 (Grecian Hospital, Mohali) immediately.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHILE PERFORMING THE TROPONIN TEST?

A laboratory technician will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm with the help of a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a little sting when the needle goes in or out. This typically takes less than five minutes.

You don’t need any special preparations for a Trop-T test.

WHAT DO THE RESULTS MEAN?

If your results show normal troponin levels for 12 hours after chest pain has started, it’s unlikely that your symptoms were caused by a heart attack.

If even a small level of troponin is found in your blood, it may mean there is some damage to your heart.

If high levels of troponin are found in one or more tests over time, it probably means you had a heart attack. Other reasons for higher than normal troponin levels include:

  1. Congestive heart failure
  2. Kidney disease
  3. Blood clots in your lungs
