Renal Replacement Therapy
Renal Replacement Therapy
What is Dialysis
This surgery is performed when parts of the hip joint are damaged or broken. This can put a lot of stress on other parts of the body which could result in further severe problems. To prevent this doctors suggest a knee replacement surgery. It reduces pain and improves functioning of the damaged hip joint.
How is Dialysis Done
- Peritoneal Dialysis
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies
The process of Hemodialysis involves blood purification by an external machine in which blood is circulated with the help of blood pumps and filtration takes place in a plastic filter called a dialyzer. A dialyzer has 2 separate sections divided by a thin wall of a semi-permeable membrane. In one segment, a fluid called dialysate is introduced, and through the other segment, blood permeates. The tiny microscopic pores in the semi-permeable membrane make it possible for waste materials and extra fluid from the blood to be transferred into the fluid. Once the blood gets filtered in the dialyzer, it is pumped back into the body while used, and now the contaminated fluid is drained out from the dialyzer.
In this procedure, blood filtration is carried out within your body by your natural lining in the abdomen (peritoneum) rather than an external artificial dialyzer. It can be done at home, at work, or while you sleep. The procedure does not require the hassle of commuting to the dialysis center and provides more flexibility and liberty.
1. Dialysate is introduced in your abdomen through catheters. Surgery will be required 3 weeks before the dialysis process.
2. The lining of your abdomen filters all the waste and solutes from the blood into the dialysate.
3. After a fixed interval of time, the used dialysate is drained out into a bag and can be discarded.
This process is adopted in those patients who have acute kidney failure and is carried out in an ICU. A person is subjected to catheters to draw blood from the body and into the CRRT machine where the purification is carried out. The purified blood is then taken back to the patient's body. The CRRT machine notifies the caretaker with a beeping sound to change the solution bags. It is a 24 hours procedure and is more easy-going on the patient’s body.
The demand for Renal replacement therapies is highly increasing in the country with each passing year. There are around 4950 dialysis centres scattered all across the country. However, they are mostly unavailable in rural areas and most of them belong to the private sectors. While the average dialysis cost is feasible there are a number of factors which add up to the digits. The average kidney transplantation cost in India may vary from 50K-3 lacs from government institutions to private institutions and the cost of drugs post-transplant may vary from 10,000-12000 annually. At Grecian, we understand your sentiments and the challenges you may face. To make every penny well spent, we have a team of talented doctors who have years of experience and a hassle-free procedure for appointments, admission and treatments.
