services. Bringing high-quality care to more patients, our recent addition Siemens Biograph HorizonTM offers the flexibility to address a wide variety of clinical indications while introducing new efficiencies.
The Finer Points of a High-quality Image
The value of PET/CT in patient care is in the details—more precise information leads to greater potential for an earlier diagnosis and a more definitive treatment strategy
1. The Crystals
Siemens’ unique LSO crystals offer consistent quality. Compared to BGO crystals, they scintillate faster and have a higher light output, providing better image quality and enabling Time-of-Flight.
2. The Detector
The smaller the crystals, the sharper the image. Biograph Horizon’s OptisoHD detectors feature LSO crystals cut into 4 mm elements and arranged with no gaps between detector blocks to provide very high spatial resolution and lesion visualization.
3. Time-of-Flight
Biograph Horizon’s LSO-based detectors and high-speed electronics support Time-of-Flight for improved signal-to-noise ratio. This enables faster scans, lower injected dose and better image quality.
4. World-Class CT
Siemens’ market-leading CT technologies further enhance the imaging capabilities. They also give us the ability to scan a wider variety of patients. For example, SAFIRE lowers dose by up to 60%, and iMAR reduces metal artifacts.
What is a PET Scan?
A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that helps reveal how your tissues and organs are functioning. A PET scan uses a radioactive drug(tracer) to show this activity.
Why It’s Done ?
A PET scan is useful in revealing or evaluating several conditions, including some cancers, heart disease and brain disorders. A PET scan or a combined CT-PET scan enables your doctor to better diagnose your condition.
Cancer
Cancer cells show up as bright spots on PET scans because they have a higher metabolic rate than do normalcells. PETscans may be useful in:
- Detecting cancer
- Revealing whether your cancer has spread
- Checking whether a cancer treatment is working
- Finding a cancer recurrence
- PET scans must be interpreted carefully because non-cancerous conditions can look like cancer, and many types of cancer do not appear on PET scans. The types of cancer most likely to show up on PETscans include:
- Brain
- Breast
- Cervical
- Colorectal
- Esophageal
- Head and neck
- Liver
- Genitourinary
- Lung
- Lymphoma
- Melanoma
- Pancreatic
- Prostate
- Thyroid
- TB
- Sarcoidosis
Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO)
Although fever is a common clinical condition, it can sometimes be challenging when the patient does not respond appropriately despite standard antibiotics and antipyretics. Under these circumstances, an elaborate search for the underlying pathology is initiated. To identify Pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) or Fever of unknown origin (FUO), endoscopy, biopsy, high-resolution CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine techniques are used as the initial line of investigation. PET-CT scan thereby helps in early diagnosis and early initiation of treatment as well as in guiding biopsy.
Result
Pictures from a PET scan display bright spots where the radioactive tracer collected. These spots reveal higher levels of chemical activity and details about how your tissues and organs are functioning. A doctor specially trained to interpret scan images (radiologist) will report the findings to your doctor. The radiologist may also compare your PET images with images from other tests you’ve undergone recently, such as computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Or the pictures may be combined to provide more detail about your condition.
