Nuclear Medicine

All About Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is an advanced stream of radiology, which has enabled doctors worldwide to diagnose diseases in very early stages of progression. The procedure helps to study the way a particular organ is functioning and its structure. It incorporates the use of radioactive substances referred to as radiotracers in very small amounts, such that it does not show any harmful effects in patients.

The kind of radiotracer used and its proportion completely depends upon the part of the body being studied and the nature of the study. At Grecian, we have the best team of doctors and state-of-the-art equipment to assist you with this novel procedure.

All About Oncology

Each of the cells of the body has a tightly regulated system that controls their growth, maturity, reproduction, and eventual death. Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all start because of the out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.

If you’re living in Chandigarh or any other neighboring cities then you will be relieved to know that Chandigarh is home to the best cancer hospital in the nation recognized at Grecian Hospital.

Nuclear Medicine Procedure

The process involves subjecting the patients to very small traces of radiopharmaceuticals, more commonly called radiotracers. These radiotracers can be injected, inhaled, or given orally to the patients who appear for the nuclear scan. To be more precise, radiotracers are a combination of carrier molecules and a radioactive atom. The carrier molecules vary as per the nature and purpose of the study.

Cancer is a fatal disease which needs to be treated on time. It can start at any part of the body and obstruct your body to function in the way it is supposed to be working by overgrowing the normal cells.Cancer can be of many types. It may start in lungs, blood, colon, and even the breasts. All types of cancers are alike in some way but they grow and progress differently.

Methods of Nuclear Medicine Scans

There are two methods or ways the nuclear medicine scans are carried out
Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT)
Positron Emission Tomography

SPECT

n SPECT, the gamma cameras rotate around the patient's body, lying on the examination table, in a tight circle. Hence several projection images are captured from different angles by the gamma camera detectors, which are generated into three-dimensional images by the computer to detect the distribution of the radioactive tracer in the body. SPECT stans are mostly recommended to diagnose heart diseases, bone disorders, gallbladder malfunctions, diagnose Parkinson's disease, and can provide very accurate results.

Positron Emission Tomography

PET scans vary slightly from the SPECT scans such that the radiotracers used here will emit positrons on decay. These positrons will react with electrons present in the body and produce a small amount of energy in the form of photons. These photons which are emitted are measured by the PET scanners and we get 3-D images of the organs. PET scans are widely used in cancer treatments. Its diagnosis, its progression, and response to treatment can be determined by PET scans.

Causes

Alcohol and tobacco use (including smokeless tobacco, sometimes called “chewing tobacco” or “snuff”) are the two most important risk factors for head and neck cancers, especially cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. Following are the causes of Head and Neck Cancer:

Brain Scans

In SPECT brain scans, the study of blood flow to the brain is carried out. The scan can closely observe the blood flow inside the brain and can locate sites of brain injury where the blood flow is reduced. The scans are also helpful for evaluating seizures, determining areas where blood flow is reduced after a stroke and tumors. While Nuclear Medicine is a hassle-free and quite a simple procedure, some people may be concerned about the side effects of being subjected to radioactive materials. However, the risks are too insignificant as compared to the pros of having diseases detected even before their symptoms are observed. At Grecian, your doctors are going to make your experience very smooth giving all the prior instructions needed for the scan like wearing loose-fitting clothes, leaving any jewelry at home, staying empty stomach a night before the scan if required, and drinking plenty of water after the procedure to flush out the radiotracers. Also, doctors may not see it fit for pregnant or breastfeeding ladies to go through certain scans.

Types of Nuclear Medicine Scans

Nuclear Medicine scans have been proven to provide more accurate results than conventional imaging techniques. It has also eliminated the requirements of surgery to diagnose internal problems. Out of the many nuclear medicine scans, the very common are:
Renal scans are nuclear medicine kidney scans involved in the study of kidney functions, the amount of blood flow to the kidneys, and detection of any abnormalities. Radioactive materials are injected in this method and pictures are taken by the computer almost immediately. The radioactive materials then expel out from the body with urine.
Cardiac scans are carried out to study coronary artery disease, diseases of the heart muscles, and to determine the extent of heart damage either due to a cardiac arrest or chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Types of Nuclear Medicine Scans

In a nuclear thyroid scan, an iodine pill is given orally, and depending upon the uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland, its functional efficiency is determined. Thyroid nodules can be also detected in the scan as the procedure involves taking images and a complete study along with the physical examination.
However, this nuclear medicine course is observed for up to 2 days and the iodine is filtered by the kidneys.
Bone scans are typically carried out to detect any degenerative or arthritic changes in the joints, other bone diseases, or tumors. Radioactive materials injected in the veins are eliminated with urine.
Generally, carried out for detecting infections, inflammation, or cancer. The radioactive material is injected into the blood veins, and Gallium attaches itself to the area which is infected or where inflammation is observed.
