Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)- Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

What is Acid Reflux or GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid frequently comes back to the esophagus, a tube that connects the mouth with the stomach. This backwash (acid reflux) irritates the esophagus lining and makes an individual feel uncomfortable.

Many people experience acid reflux from time to time. GERD is mild acid reflux that occurs at least twice a week, or moderate to severe acid reflux that occurs at least once a week.

Symptoms

Major signs and symptoms of GERD are:

  1. Trouble in swallowing food
  2. Pain in chest
  3. A sensation of a lump in the throat
  4. Heartburn, which might be worse at night
  5. Regurgitation: a sour or bitter-tasting acid backing up into your throat or mouth
  6. Weight loss for no known reason
  7. Hiccups that don’t let up
  8. Dysphagia — the sensation of food being stuck in your throat
  9. Bloody or black stools or bloody vomiting

Causes

One common cause of acid reflux disease is a stomach abnormality called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the stomach and LES move above the diaphragm, a muscle that separates your stomach from your chest.

Normally, the diaphragm helps to keep acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and cause symptoms of acid reflux disease.

Diagnosis

Your doctor diagnoses gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by reviewing your symptoms and medical history. If your symptoms don’t improve with lifestyle changes and medicines, you may need one or more tests, such as:

  • Endoscopy
  • pH monitoring
  • Esophageal manometry
  • Barium swallow (esophagram)
  • Biopsy

Treatment

You may be able to manage symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by making lifestyle changes or taking over-the-counter medicines. Doctors may recommend lifestyle changes, medicines, surgery, or a combination of these treatments.
