From an Accidental discovery of unknown rays (X-Rays) by William Roentgen in 1985,a German Physicist to this time (almost 125 years), Radiation Therapy has undergone vast changes from bizarre ways of therapeutic approach to most modern rationale approach with computer aided technologies. Radiotherapy is the branch of clinical medicine that uses ionizing radiation either alone or in combination with other treatment modalities for the treatment of various malignancies by damaging DNA of cancer cells resulting in cancer cell death. As a discipline, it exists at the juncture of physics and Biology with very interesting intersection between patient care, science & technology.

    DNB – RADIOTHERAPY

    The aim of Radiotherapy is to deliver a previously measured dose of Radiation to a defined tumour volume with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissues with eradication of tumour, high quality of life & prolongation of survival .This had been possible with the advent of new technologies like IMRI, IGRT, VMAT, SRS, SRT over the last 2-3 decades. 

    Radiotherapy may be external beam Radiotherapy in which Radiation is delivered from outside the body by Linear Accelerator or by Brachytherapy in which Radiation is given from inside like ICRT (Intracavitary Radiotherapy) or Interstitial Brachytherapy (by microselectron).

    Modern Linear Accelerators are equipped with multi-leaf collimators (MLCs)

    which can move within the Radiation field, allow maximum dose to tumour, minimal dose to normal tissues with IGRT, increase in accuracy, precision of target localization, and can actually see the tumours that we are treating. By being a Radiation Oncologist, you get the best opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients, while working with a fascinating, technologically advanced, constantly evolving form of it.

    Currently more than 50% of all cancer patients receive Radiotherapy during the course of treatment either in primary management or for symptom control. We at our centre are equipped with the latest technology in Radiation therapy like 2 linear Accelerators, (LINAC), 1 Brachytherapy (microselectron) & CT simulator for IGRT, IMRT & VMAT.
